(To observe the level of water repellency of water proof finished goods)

A-I Method (Spray method)
Testing Procedure
(1) Prepare 3 test specimens of about 20cm x 20cm.
(2) Fasten the test specimens securely in the metal hoop of the water repellency tester so that it represents a smooth wrinkle free surface and place it face up on the tester. Adjust the metal hoop so that the center of the spray coincide with the center of the metal hoop.
(3) Pour 250 ml of water at normal temperature into the funnel and spray the whole quantity on the test specimen for a period of 25 - 30 sec.
(4) Detach the metal hoop from the stand. Confirm whether water had penetrated to the back of the test specimen. With the face side of the test specimen down, hold the metal hoop by one edge and tap the opposite edge lightly once against the table. Then rotate it 180。 and similarly tap again once on the point previously held to remove any excess water drop.
(5) Compare the wetting of the test specimen with a photographic rating standard and grade it accordingly. Express water repellency as the average of the 3 test specimen (to the nearest whole number).

Notes
1) As specified in JIS L 1092.
2) In case of twills, seersuckers, piques or woven fabrics of similar construction, the metal hoop should be placed in such a way that the ribs are 45。 to the direction of water flow.
3) Touch the back of the test specimen by hand to confirm whether the water had penetrated or turn the metal hoop upside down and observe for water penetration.
4) The relation between the appearance and the distribution of points is as follows:
100 point : Indicates no wetting on the face side.
90 point : Indicates slight wetting on the face side.
80 point : Indicates wetting on the face side at the point where the water falls.
70 point : Indicates partial wetting on half of the face side.
50 point : Indicates wetting on the entire face side.
0 point : Indicates complete wetting on the face side.
5) Indicate in ( ) when there is water penetration
